Finalborgo is not a beach town. It's a medieval walled borgo 2km inland from Finale Ligure (the beach town on the coast), and the contrast is deliberate: while Finale Ligure has gelaterias and parasols, Finalborgo has 15th-century walls, Gothic-Renaissance cloisters (Complesso di Santa Caterina โ now Museo Archeologico), baroque churches, and the particular gravity of a place that was capital of the Marchesato del Finale for 400 years. In the last 20 years, Finalborgo/Finale has also become one of Europe's premier outdoor climbing and mountain biking destinations โ the limestone cliffs surrounding the village hold thousands of sport climbing routes, and the Finale mountain biking trail network is world-famous. Plan my Riviera trip →Complesso di Santa Caterina: A 14th-century Dominican convent with two-story Gothic-Renaissance cloisters โ the most beautiful medieval cloister in Liguria. Now houses the Museo Archeologico del Finale (prehistoric caves, Roman finds, medieval artifacts). €5. The walls and gates: Enter through Porta Reale or Porta Testa โ the medieval circuit is nearly complete. Collegiate di San Biagio: Baroque interior with carved wooden choir stalls. The borgo streets: Via Nicotera, Via Beretta โ medieval and Renaissance palazzi, artisan shops, and the occasional climbing gear shop (the outdoor culture is visible everywhere). Climbing: 3,000+ routes on limestone cliffs within 15min of town. All grades. Finale Climbing festival (September). MTB: 200km+ of trails through Mediterranean maquis and hilltop villages.
Getting there: Finale Ligure station (Genoa-Ventimiglia line, 1h from Genoa, 1.5h from Nice). Walk or bus 2km inland to Finalborgo. Stay: €55-100/night (Finalborgo or Finale Marina). Eat: Ai Cuattru Canti (€25-35 โ Ligurian, excellent corzetti pasta), Osteria della Briga (€20-30). Combine with: Finale Ligure beach (2km), Noli (15min โ one of the most beautiful fishing villages in Liguria), Albenga (20min), Borgio Verezzi (10min โ cave + cliff-top village).
