1. Barcolana (Trieste, 2nd Sunday of October): The world's largest sailing regatta — 2,000+ boats, 25,000+ sailors. The entire Gulf of Trieste fills with sails. Watch FREE from: Molo Audace (the pier — best view), Castello di Miramare (elevated, dramatic), any waterfront bar in Trieste. The city becomes a sailing festival — parties, concerts, seafood, 4 days of events around the race. Hotels book out months ahead. 2. Rolex Cup / Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (Porto Cervo, Sardinia, September): High-society yacht racing at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Watch from: Porto Cervo marina (free) — €10M+ yachts racing in emerald water.
3. Giraglia Rolex Cup (June): 241nm offshore race Saint-Tropez → Giraglia rock (Corsica) → Genova. Watch the finish from Genova's Porto Antico. 4. Regata Storica (Venice, 1st Sunday of September): NOT a yacht race — a HISTORICAL BOAT PARADE + gondola races through the Grand Canal. Costumed rowers in 16th-century boats. The most SPECTACULAR boat event in Italy. Watch from any bridge on the Grand Canal (free — arrive 2h early). 5. Vele d'Epoca Imperia (Imperia, Liguria, September): Classic/vintage yacht regatta — beautiful wooden boats from the early 1900s. 6. Vela Cup (various — Lake Garda, multiple events): Garda is Italy's most active inland sailing — races every weekend in season. Watch from Malcesine, Riva del Garda, or Torbole.
Barcolana: Anyone can enter. You need a boat (rental possible) + registration (barcolana.it, ~€100). Even small boats (6m) join — it's not elite.
