San Leo sits on a vertical-walled rocky mesa in the Montefeltro hills, accessible by a single road carved into the cliff. At the summit: a Renaissance fortress (rebuilt by Francesco di Giorgio Martini for Federico da Montefeltro, 1479) so impregnable that it served as a state prison — its most famous inmate was Count Cagliostro, the 18th-century occultist, alchemist, and confidence trickster, who was locked in a cell with a single slit window and died here in 1795 after 4 years of isolation.
