Vernazza is the consensus "most beautiful" of the five Cinque Terre villages: a natural harbor (the only one in the five) surrounded by colored houses, a Doria castle watchtower on the headland, a Gothic church (Santa Margherita d'Antiochia, 14th century) whose facade IS the harbor wall, and terraced vineyards climbing to 400 meters on every side. The problem: 2.5 million people visit the Cinque Terre annually, and most of them are on the Vernazza main street between 10am and 4pm. The solution: stay overnight (the crowds are day-trippers โ by 6pm Vernazza empties and becomes a fishing village again), arrive early (the 7:30am train from La Spezia gives you the village virtually alone), or come in shoulder season (April-May, October โ the vineyards are either blooming or turning gold). Plan my Cinque Terre trip →The harbor: The heart of Vernazza โ a tiny piazza opens onto a cove where fishing boats are winched up a ramp. Sit with your feet dangling over the harbor wall and eat focaccia. Doria Castle (Torre, 11th century): Climb the steps to the watchtower at the top of the headland โ the view encompasses the coastline from Monterosso to Corniglia. €2. The main street (Via Roma): A single lane connecting the train station to the harbor โ vaulted passages, small shops, restaurants built into medieval arches. Swimming: From the harbor rocks or the tiny beach (rocks and sand). The water is clean and deep. Sentiero Azzurro: The coastal trail connecting all 5 villages. Vernazza to Monterosso (2h, moderate-difficult, dramatic) and Vernazza to Corniglia (1.5h, moderate, vineyard views) are the best sections.
Getting there: Vernazza station (La Spezia-Genova local line โ every 15-20min). From La Spezia: 20min. From Genoa: 1.5h. NO CARS in Vernazza. Park in La Spezia and take the train. Stay: €80-160/night (affittacamere โ rooms rented by locals โ are the only accommodation). Book months ahead for summer. Eat: Gambero Rosso (harbor terrace โ €35-50, seafood), Ristorante Belforte (in the castle walls โ €40-55, the view IS the menu), Focacceria Vulnetia (focaccia + farinata, €3-5). Cinque Terre Card: €16/day for trains between villages + trail access. Essential. Combine with: All 5 villages (train hops โ Monterosso 7min, Corniglia 5min, Manarola 10min, Riomaggiore 15min), Portovenere (boat from Vernazza or train from La Spezia).
