Monte Testaccio is the world's largest ancient RECYCLING SITE — or its largest garbage dump, depending on your perspective. Between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD, the Romans dumped 53 million amphorae (terracotta shipping containers for olive oil, mostly from Spain's Baetica) at the ancient river port. The oil residue made the amphorae impossible to reuse, so they were systematically broken, stacked, and dusted with lime to reduce the smell. Layer by layer, a 35-meter hill grew. Today the hill is protected. The caves at its base are nightclubs. The pottery shards are visible in cross-section wherever the hill has been cut.
The hill itself: Visible from Via di Monte Testaccio and Via Galvani. Guided visits inside (through the Sovraintendenza, €4, advance booking) let you walk ON the pottery layers — the amphora fragments are organized, stamped with production marks (tituli picti), and datable to specific years and Spanish provinces. This is not random dumping — it was Roman LOGISTICS visible in cross-section. The nightclubs (base of the hill): Goa Club (techno, in a cave carved from pottery). Alibi (LGBTQ+). Akab (electronic). L'Isola Pedonale. The caves were dug into the hill for wine storage in the 18th-19th centuries (the pottery provides constant cool temperature). The clubs inherited the spaces.
