Perugino: Raphael's teacher — his Adoration of the Magi and Madonna with Saints show the serene, luminous Umbrian style that Raphael inherited and transcended. Piero della Francesca: The Sant'Antonio Polyptych (early work, already showing his mathematical precision). Fra Angelico: The Madonna and Child triptych. Pinturicchio: The Miracles of San Bernardino panels. The gallery traces Umbrian painting from the 13th to the 18th century — you see the "school" develop in real time. €10. Arco Etrusco (Etruscan Arch): A 3rd-century BC gateway in the city walls — massive travertine blocks without mortar, still standing after 2,300 years. The Latin inscription above was added by Augustus after he conquered the city. Fontana Maggiore: The 13th-century fountain in Piazza IV Novembre — relief panels by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano depicting the months, the liberal arts, and Biblical scenes. One of the most beautiful medieval fountains in Italy. Rocca Paolina: A 16th-century papal fortress built over a demolished medieval neighborhood — the escalators from the lower city pass THROUGH the ruins (underground streets, house walls, vaulted passages). Umbria Jazz (July, 10 days): Europe's premier jazz festival — since 1973. Headliners play the Arena Santa Giuliana (5,000 seats), but the REAL magic is the free stages in Piazza IV Novembre and the streets of the centro. Past acts: Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Chick Corea. Tickets from €20 (arena) to free (piazza stages). Book accommodation MONTHS ahead — the city fills completely. Eurochocolate (October): Italy's largest chocolate festival — Corso Vannucci becomes a river of chocolate stalls. The Università per Stranieri: Founded 1925 — if you want to learn Italian in Italy, this is the most prestigious school. Courses from 1 month to 1 year. The student population gives Perugia a youthful energy that most hill towns lack.
